The first area (pre searing) is just a training area, you wont miss anything other than the scenery by moving onto the main area (post searing).

If your a ranger you should really be using a bow with ranger skills, for ranger the best use of the elementalist secondary profession is enchantments like conjure flame to boost damage, but for the time being your best of sticking to just ranger skills.

Before leaving ascalon its usually a good idea to pick up all skills for your primary profession atleast, also if its your first time round the game its good idea to do all quests you can find.

I agree with divinus, once you leave pre- using your bow, either fire, lightning you'll want to get and use conjure flame or lightning for that added extra dmg. and concentrate like divinus said on your primary profession then later on adjust accordingly(sp?) by mixing in the either conjure ok..best of luck to you and have fun with it. I to am a r/ele it's alot of fun to play.

Later on in the game (about Kryta I think) you can start to find enchantment spells, known as Conjure *element*. For the 'Conjure' spells of your Elementalist secondary, you must use a bow that is either Fiery, for Conjure Flame; Icy for Conjure Frost; or Shocking for Conjure Lightning. That way, when you cast the enchantment 'Conjure X' and you are wielding a bow of the corresponding element 'X', you will do extra damage.

Also, there is no 'Conjure' spell for Earth.

If you mean that you want to be a Ranger who casts Ele spells rather than attacking with your bow or pet... I'd say go Elementalist primary. Generally, stick to bows.

You could indeed pick up a staff to boost your energy and skill recarge/casting. However, this is not really recommended. While you are certainly free to play your character however you want, most people would advise you to use a bow (and thus, the appropriate ranger skills), since you are first and foremost a ranger.

You won't get traps for a while.

The main advantage of being a ranger primary is for your expertise attribute. Expertise is amazing for making certain skills cost less energy. Here's the rub. Most elementalist skills are classified as spells, which expertise doesn't affect.

If you're really interested in the elementalist line of skills, it's probably better to make an elementalist. Their proprietary attribute is energy storage, which gives you a much larger energy pool. That's good, because many elementalist spells are quite costly.

I played an R/E. I generally filled my skillbar with ranger skills, as the ranger class is very well rounded. When I got to certain quests that would benefit from an ele skill or two, I would add them to my skillbar. With the way both classes are designed, I think you will have the most success playing this way. Most rangers you will talk to will tell you that they fill most or all of their skillbar with ranger skills. If you try to play your ranger as an ele, you will probably feel limited by the energy pool you have to work with.

I think a good way to look at any secondary profession is as a set of supporting skills, not an equal profession to jump back and forth from.

That said, play your character the way that feels best to you. I would wait until level 7 to leave pre, though. Have fun.

Incidentally, with Conjure Flame you don't need a special bow if you also use the preparation Kindle Arrows.

The resear spiders are by Fort Ranik. Go out, and go to the left, and spiders will fall out of the trees (this is during the Basket of Apples quest thingy)

As a ranger, make sure you have spoken to Aiden before you leave. I made the mistake of forgetting about him until right before I left pre-sear. I almost missed out on the fiery arrows. He will also give you a quest which takes you through a bunch of spiders.

There's actually a skill checklist that can help you make sure you have every skill before leaving. Very handy.
